   Defend national security, as well as regional security.

   Měiguó xiézhù Táiwān, jiāqiáng zìwǒ fángwèi nénglì.
   The United States assists Taiwan in strengthening its self-defense capabilities.

   Měiguó gēnjù “Táiwān Guānxi Fǎ”, tígōng Táiwān fángwèixìng wǔqì.

   Lǜshī zài fǎtíng shàng wèi “bèigào”biànhù.
   The lawyer defends the "defendant" in court.
   (N.B. In English, "defend" is transitive, which can directly take an object.  But in Chinese, "辩护/辯護" is intransitive.  The sentence structure should be "为...辩护/為...辯護".)

   Zuòwéi yī míng lǜshī, wǒ bìxū wèi dāngshìrén biànhù.  
   As a lawyer, I must defend the client.
   (The "client" in a legal case is neither 客人,顾客/顧客, nor客户, but 当事人/當事人.)

   Tā zài huìyì shàng wèi zìjǐ de guāndiǎn biànhù.
