【Understatement】

• An understatement is a literary device that downplays a situation, making it seem less serious, significant, or large than it actually is. Typically, understatements are employed to subtly emphasize the very qualities they seem to diminish. Thus, a speaker might use understatements to express their opinions while preserving people's dignity.
• Note: The word order for expressing understatements may differ between Chinese and English. In Chinese, understatement phrases generally precede the speaker's comments. In English, however, some phrases can follow the comment, such as "to a certain extent."
• Words/phrases of understatement are marked in red; the comments are marked in brown.
